The chairman of the Australian rugby league commission Peter V’landys said Walters was the right man for work.

“Kevin played for the kangaroos, had a successful coach career with Brisbane Broncos and Queensland Maroons, and will bring this expertise to the national ash team,” he said.

“Kevin turned with the kangaroos as a player, was a leader as a player and as a coach pedigree is a natural adjustment for the national team.”

Walters has played 291 games with Canberra and Brisbane Broncos raiders, winning six prime ministers, while showing up in 20 original state matches for Queensland and playing 11 tests.

Australia will face England of Shaun Wane in three games from Wembley on October 25, with the new Everton stadium in Bramley-Moore Dock in Liverpool and Headingley in Leeds which also hosts tests.

England has not been confronted with Australia from the 2017 World Cup final, which the kangaroos won 6-0.

Australia also announced that the current coach of the women’s team, Jess Skinner, would extend his mandate with the Jillaroos to the 2026 World Cup.
