A popular rugby junior league competition in the city has been relaunched – and there is a Grand Prix at stake.

For the first time in about a decade, six of the city’s community clubs will challenge the Warrington Cup in a trio of different age groups.

Matches are already underway within the under 14s, under 16 and under 18 with teams registered by Crosfields, Woolston Rovers, Latchford Albion Giants, Bank Quay Bulls, Rylands Sharks and Culcheth Eagles.

And the culmination of these efforts will be the finale day, which should take place on the largest scene that Warrington can offer Stade Halliwell Jones on Saturday 18 October.

“I have been involved in junior rugby for 10 years now and I do not remember that the city is in the position in which it is today with a team or two teams at each age group of all clubs.

“I thought it would be an excellent opportunity to recreate a Warrington Cup trophy, which creates more games for children’s development, rivalry but also a fantastic opportunity to play at the Halliwell Jones stadium which is the ultimate reward.

“We are two weeks in the devices and games have all been competitive and difficult, but exactly what rugby is and it is an excellent sporting spirit between all clubs.”

The hope is that the Cup return competition will become annual, but the organizers are looking for sponsors on board and providing support.

Anyone interested in sponsoring or supporting the competition must contact David Manfredi by sending an email to WarringToncupenquries@gmail.com.
