Water storage tanks to install at Buckinghashire Golf Club

Three water storage tanks will be installed in a gold club near Amersham next year.

The Harewood Downs Golf Club tanks will collect drainage water to reuse on the route.

They will be built between the second and ninth holes, near the recently renovated clubhouse, and will store up to 19,500 cubic meters of water.

Matt Mayfield, managing director of the Harewood Downs Golf Club, said: “As a golf club and as a business, we are responsible for doing everything in our power to preserve and protect the environment, and one of the biggest areas that a golf club should do so is their water consumption.

“Investing in the construction of these tanks is a huge step for us, but this will lead to a major reduction in our use of resources and our carbon footprint.

“We are delighted to switch to recycled water and play our role in this crucial moment for industry.”

The tanks will collect drainage water on the site and recycle it for use on green vegetables, T-shirts and club approaches, and possibly fairways.

The project was approved by the Buckinghashire Council earlier this year, the construction should start in April 2026.

The use of water remains a major environmental challenge in golf, with lessons worldwide consuming billions of liters per day.

The industry is increasingly turning to recycled water in the context of efforts to reduce the environmental impact.

Once the tanks are operational, Harewood Downs hopes to eliminate his dependence on the main water for the maintenance of the courses.

In the proposals, which were approved in April, the club said: “Climate change affects everyone around the world and although the political campaign is so that everyone is making lifestyle changes, there is also a high level of importance when determining all means to make changes to safeguard businesses and for golf, where the main provision is to provide recreation water and more Backing the gameplay and viability of the golf course, thus retaining recreational installation as a whole and reducing the need to rely on a precious water resource of local authorities.

“A certain number of golf bodies, such as the Turf Research Institute sports and the main golf organizations; R&A and golf in England, advocate the need for golf clubs to look at measures to collect water by sustainable means during golf times and summer months.”
